Knitting Needle in the Face

My got a splinter - right through her face
Tuesday morning had a real horror movie awakening in store for My Lorentzon, 26, in Kalmar.
Bang! it sounded when the shelf above the bed fell. She touched her face and thought she had a nosebleed.
But then she tried to lift off the shelf – and made the discovery:
- I felt that "oops, I'm stuck", says My herself.

She had duct taped two knitting needles onto the shelf that had acted as holders for the cell phone when she watched a movie.
They had both flown off when the shelf fell – and speared My in the face.

Nine centimeters
The first one was shallow, stuck behind the ear. The other one had penetrated nine centimeters in though the nasal bone, behind the eye, past the optic nerve and came to a stop at the jaw.

It was an acquaintance in the building My lives in who had to place the SOS call.
- I didn't think very much, it was pretty panicky. It's not exactly something you've seen before, says My's friend, who was lightheaded from the experience.

- Paramedics were able to remove the first knitting needle quickly upon arrival, because it was so shallow, My says. The other one had to be surgically removed.

"Incredibly painful"
My Lorentzon describes that she was shocked.
- It felt like getting your ear pierced. But when I accidentally touched the needle in my face, it was incredibly painful.

She says the doctors she met at Kalmar's Hospital were both surprised and impressed. She had surgery at the Ear-, Nose- and Throat- clinic and got to bring the knitting needle home the day after, as a memory.

- I'm considering putting it up on the wall. But not above the bed, of course.

Despite being both bruised and patched up, she is expected to be able to make a full recovery – and keep her vision on both eyes.

- Most of all I just think it's cool that I survived. But now I can honestly say: Don't try this at home, kids.
