I still clean my ears and earrings before putting them in and I've had them for a few decades. I'm guessing it was uncleanliness or an allergy to the earrings. I have a nickel allergy, which cheaper jewelers mix in with gold. They itch and I have to take them out, but, I'd never let them get to this point.
