Actually, they do have a spray-on protectant covering their hands! It can be far better than gloves in some ways. In my opinion, though, I'd've worn gloves!!
Micha said you can actually feel them a lot easier under the skin if you're not wearing gloves.

I'm no vet but I'm pretty sure that letting "Lucky" eat a parasite that was just squeezed out of his side probably isn't good for his recovery. What kind of 3rd World Vet is this quack?

He is a German national volunteering his time in the Gambia to help these people and their pets, and knows a helluva lot more about what is acceptable for a dog and what is not than you do. Leave him the hell alone until you show me your degree in Veterinary Medicine.
