Incision to Relieve Compartment Syndrome

Compartment syndrome is a limb- and life-threatening condition which occurs after an injury, when there is not a sufficient amount of blood to supply the muscles and nerves with oxygen and nutrients because of the raised pressure within the compartment such as the arm, leg or any enclosed space within the body and leads to nerve damage because of the lack of blood supply. The severity of compartment syndrome can be divided into acute, subacute, and chronic compartment syndrome.

Re: Incision to Relieve Compartment Syndrome

Why not just put the compartment to good use?

As a place to hide valuables for instance.

Re: Incision to Relieve Compartment Syndrome

This usually happens as a result of a crushing injury. Just did this to a guy two days ago, his draft horse leaned on his arm while he reached in to close the gate. We had to open up his biceps and most of his distal flexors. You leave the wound open like that for as long as 24 hours until the fluid drains and the swelling goes down.

Re: Incision to Relieve Compartment Syndrome

I almost had to have this done on my arm last year from a post-op infection, swelling was that bad.
Doc said I was running risk of compartment syndrome.
I got lucky with with i.v. antibiotics and swelling started reducing, and lucked out again, wasn't MRSA, just regular staph.

I also know someone who actually had compartment syndrome both arms/legs. He almost died, accidental overdose, methadone. was at a camping party, took one of someone's pills thinking it was vicodin or something. (guy wasn't that bright...) passed out in his tent, they found him all but dead. organs were shutting down.
(Kidneys were dead, liver was on it's way out. got a kidney from his brother.)
Can't move his right hand and limited use of left. Massive scars the length of his arms/legs.

This is also associated in venomous snake bites aswell.
