Re: Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura

One more thing- the majority of HSP cases are triggered by upper respiratory illnesses- I was thinking about the pneumonia. I was 39 and extremely healthy when it happened to me- immune system just went crazy!!!

Re: Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura

How are your legs now?
I'm now in remission- thanks to very strong immunosuppressive drugs- I have no symptoms at all, off the drugs but occasionally I relapse but the flares are VERY mild. I spent two years in and out of hospital- funnily enough when I did that thread it was right at the beginning- when things got a lot worse I felt unable to share the gory details- like losing over a litre of blood from my backside etc. I have to live again and stop living like my life is on hold- hoping to go to university next year (I'll be 44) to do a nursing degree. It was awful, but it wasn't cancer and I had outstanding care here in Scotland- thank you for asking 😘

Re: Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura

Had this myself from my alcoholism, my platelet count was down to 17k ppml
had the marks on more than my legs, was on my arms/body as well.. the nosebleeds were the worst.. any minor bump became a major bruise etc. took 2 years for all the marks to go away after I quit drinking. my platelets are around 150 ppml now. (norm is 120k-400k ppml according to my doc.)
5 years sober now.. no marks and liver is almost "normal" again
Don't bleed as easily, don't bruise etc. but after the cause is fixed, still takes awhile for all the marks to subside.
Hope your relative has a full recovery.

Re: Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura

had a kid in the hospital with this last week. first CBC showed platelets at zero. he was covered from head to toe in petechia and bruises as well as wet purpura (generally denotes a little more severity) got a round of IVIG and his platelets popped back up to 15

Agreed- Looks like when my kid had HSP too...but she had arthritis with the purpurin as well.
