Hip Prosthetic After Removal
Family member had a hip replacement revision after 8(ish) years of initial surgery and the surgeon let me see the previous unit that was removed. According to the surgeon, the bone cement used to secure the unit in place had completely rejected, and he could (in his own words) "twist it like a doorknob" on retrieval. Luckily the new replacement essentially has a threaded screw end and secures into the femur, and should last a lifetime.

Re: Hip Prosthetic After Removal
My father had one, but was installed in 1968 in a VA hospital. When he had it replaced with a composite, he brought the original home. It looked like an oversized, overweight shift knob.

Re: Hip Prosthetic After Removal
The second recovery was actually remarkably easy compared to the first! They were out of the hospital in two days & ambulatory much faster than the previous surgery. The doctor had told us that since the bone cement was no longer adhered it was essentially grinding bone marrow out of the femur (makes my teeth hurt just thinking of how that had to feel) The day after the revision, my family member had much more color and healthier than they had in years. |
