Hairy tongue is a benign change of the top surface of the tongue that is characterized by elongation of the many small nodules called papillae.

It gets is name because the papillae resemble stubby hairs. The papillae can become stained from coffee, tea, colored soda, or bacteria.

The cause is unknown but it is usually seen during antibiotic use, in smokers, in persons using stomach antacids, radiation therapy, xerostomia, use of oxygenating mouth rinses or in hospitalized and/or debilitated patients.

Usually it is asymptomatic but may produce bad breath or cause a burning sensation. Treatment is to scrape the tongue, which will remove the papilla but the condition can recur.

Fissured Tongue is a condition in which cracks or fissures are observed on the surface of the tongue. Food debris and some bacteria colonies may form in the fissures but this is almost always a condition with no symptoms. No treatment is necessary once it is properly diagnosed.

A shitload of people use peroxide-based "whitening" mouth rinses, yours truly included. Thank god I've never met anyone with a furry tongue. I mean, if you're allegedly supposed to get hairy palms when you masturbate, what do you have to do to get a hairy tongue? Auto-fellatio/auto-cunnilingus?

Oh great, I use a whitening mouth wash (peroxide included in the ingredients), I smoke, and I practically live on tea, Coke, Pepsi, Mr. Pibb......but I brush my tongue AND have a tongue scraper, so who knows if it'll ever happen to me.

On a serious note, I quit drinking black tea in bulk when I heard about that guy who ruined his kidneys by drinking too much of it. Green tea is easier on the kidneys, so my family switched to that instead of black tea. I'm just sayin'...
