Hemicorporectomy: "Lumbarectomy" Translumbar Amputation
Hemicorporectomy, also called translumbar amputation, is a rare operation that removes the lower body, including the lumbar spine and spinal cord, pelvic bones and contents, legs and external genitalia. The procedure is used for conditions including locally advanced pelvic tumors, complex pressure ulcers, severe pelvic trauma and pelvic bone infection. It requires diversion of both stool and urine through surgically created openings. The operation was described in 1950 and first performed around 1960. The first long-term survivor underwent surgery in 1961. Rehabilitation can include wheelchair use and a basket-socket prosthesis that supports the remaining torso. Some patients learn to walk with a walker and regain greater independence in daily activities. |

He looks so much happier. Probably got rid of a lot of pain and hassles. If his legs were useless anyways, it was probably hard to get around and to even move himself. And those sores were just too bad. At least now he has some quality of life. Awesome post |

I wonder if he had to buy a grave for that part of his body. Something like : John Doe born 1978 lower part 2010 - upper part ____ Or it's just biomedical waste. |
