Even if it did survive, the treatment it gets might be that bad that the poor child would be in pure agony for the rest of it's life. Plus the family might reject it. Not only for social reasons but because of the cost of treatment.

I'm not sure they can cry, seeing as their eyes are like lumps of coagulated blood with skin over them in most cases. I have seen pictures of some that aren't so severely affected crying though. Their vocal chords are also affected as well, as with the eyes, some more severely than others.
