India. The victim, 24-year-old Dheeraj, had a dispute with his wife's family regarding his desire to mortgage one bigha of his land to pay off a debt of 3 to 4 lakh rupees. His in-laws actively opposed the sale, causing him severe mental distress.

So he went to a nearby bridge and made a noose from a rope he took with him and hanged himself but commuters spotted him dangling from the edge of the bridge within a minute and they mobilized instantly to heave his weight back up over the ledge.

A suicide note was recovered from his pocket that blamed ongoing mental harassment by his in-laws over a property dispute.

He was brought to the Hospital and receives critical care.

That's an 18 ft drop it looks like to me so why didn't his neck break?
Possible that rope used has a degree of elasticity. If the rope was slightly elastic or if the knot slipped partially rather than stopping his weight instantly, it cushioned the peak deceleration force.

A broken neck usually requires the knot to be positioned precisely under the jaw to snap the spine backward. If the knot shifted to the side or back of his neck during the drop, it causes rapid constriction and strangulation instead of a skeletal snap.

He also looks not heavy build so maybe his 24 year old muscles were playing a part in this also. These onlookers acted fast within a minute so he ain't braindead yet.
