Strike turns violent
Another casual Post Office employee has been attacked by striking employees.

Another Post Office casual employee has been attacked while working at the Bryanston depot mail.

It is alleged that Post Office employees, who are on an illegal strike, are targeting the casual workers and threatening them with violence if they are found to be working.

Another casual worker was allegedly attacked by striking Post Office employees.

“These guys are following us to bus and taxi ranks and even to our homes and they wait for us and attack us. Some of our colleagues have been taken to some hospital in Sandton but we don’t know how many and which hospital,” explains a scared casual worker, who did not want to be named.

Other casual workers claimed they have reported their concerns to their supervisors and unions such as CWU, but spokesperson for the union Matakane Motapo said the union is not part of the Post Office strike.

“I have not received any reports about our members being affected by the Post Office strike. We are not part of this strike,” said Motapo.

Casual workers argue that a task team called National Workers Committee was formed, in order to help them with the process of getting permanent jobs – as far back as December 2012.

They say management has been promising to help but nothing has been done for them to be made permanent employees at Sapo.

One of the area managers referred the matter to South African Police Office’s communication, which is yet to respond.

An email was sent to the communications personnel for comment and we are still waiting for their response.
