Expressing anal glands. It's necessary can cause severe infections if not done. If not done properly can have serious consequences. I would wear gloves the smell is quite nasty.

Better to express them in a controlled situation than have them randomly explode. I once got a full-body spray-down from my cat when he flipped out (upon seeing the mailman) and ran up a tree. At first I thought he'd peed on me, but no, the smell was...different. There's really nothing else like it in the world, and I don't mean that in a good way. Had to go in and strip down and douse myself in enzyme cleaner to get the stank off, because regular soap wouldn't do it. Scary business back there...

Yes. Why  I have never heard of this. Those nails can't help the dog feel less pain, if there is any, either. |
