Goiter Images: Goiters, Boils (Furuncles) and an Ovarian Dermoid Cyst
A goiter is an enlargement of the thyroid gland and is usually not cancer. Iodine deficiency is the most common cause. Goiters are more common in women, people over 40 and people raised in iodine-deficient areas. A very large goiter can rarely interfere with breathing or swallowing. Treatment for symptomatic goiters can include hormone pills, iodine, radioactive iodine or thyroid surgery. A boil, also called a furuncle, is a hard, painful lump that fills with pus. Most clear up on their own, though treatment can include drainage or antibiotics. Several boils together form a carbuncle. An ovarian dermoid cyst, or mature cystic teratoma, is a benign germ cell tumour that can contain hair, fatty material and teeth. |
