I have a friend that has a huge collection of old medical instruments from the 17-1800's and I'm pretty familiar with what most of these are and what they're for. Yeah, a lot of it was pretty brutal but it was the best they had and believe it or not, a few of these actually did save lives. What's really funny is that some of the pieces this guy has he found in antique shops where the owners didn't know what they were and were selling them for cheap (when they're actually worth mega bucks) and thought they were something else. For instance, one place had a retractor that was used to pull back a wound to explore or remove something like a bullet and it looks like a two pronged hook and they had it labeled as a "bacon turner." Another one had a long tube with a wooden handle at one end used to "purge" the intestinal tract kind of like an enema, and they had it labeled as a "cake decorator."

Think of how brutal medicine would be if we didnt have general anesthesia. I think that people would probably refrain from seeing their physicians and dentist till it was too much to tolerate.
