Neuroplasticity entails a reasonable prognosis. You go girl!

Re: Girl with Half A Brain

There was an episode of House where a character played by Dave Matthews had a rare movement disorder and was given a hemispherectomy

Great show! One of my favorite pricks! (House)

Re: Girl with Half A Brain

wow!!! totally amazing. the little girl seems completely normal.

i just have to wonder about how it went just before the very first time half a brain was removed successfully.

doctor: no, really, your child will completely recover. the one side will cover for the other. s/he will be just like new.

patients parent: are you out of your mind doc? if we only needed half a brain we'd be born that way.

doctor: oh yeh? and if we were meant to be naked we would be born that way too. never mind that last sentence. i'm telling you, in some cases, half is as good as all. and in the future, we can use the damaged half to replace those who are completely brainless.

patients parent: are you referring to people like presidents and those in the senate and house of representatives, judges, certain religious leaders, etc.?

doctor: now you are getting the whole picture!

patients parent: ok then go for it. i will sacrifice my child for the improvement of our country's future.

doctor: you are sacrificing nothing. i tell ya, she be fine. trust me."

patients parent: have you had this operation because i think you only have half a brain if even that much.

once again, the unconventional doctor proved his point. the child recovered and was completely normal. next week we will look at the doctors file and how he proved that the wearing the winged suit and jumping off of the eiffel tower was the cure for his patients mental illness.

Re: Girl with Half A Brain

She's a very beautiful little girl! It's absolutely remarkable just how resilient children are!! I used to have seizures - very mild - when I was a little girl. Once I hit puberty, they disappeared. Go figure! If the mild ones I experienced as a child were disturbing, I can't imagine how she got thru the ones she had! I'm very happy for her!!!!

Re: Girl with Half A Brain

That is outstanding. Who knows; maybe the right side of the brain might grow back. But if so, it might have the same problem also.

Re: Girl with Half A Brain

I saw her picture and story today in my psychology textbook! We just had an exam about the brain, the functions and different parts, and her story was in there. I was so glad to see video of her being vibrant and happy =)

Re: Girl with Half A Brain

Missing parts of the brain won't grow back, but neuroplasticity itself is real and has been studied, and is about the closest you can get.

This girl is absolutely ADORABLE, and I'm overwhelmed at the fluency of her speech and the absence of any obvious hemiparesis/hemiplegia.

Go modern medicine go!
