Giant Papillary Conjunctivitis
In giant papillary conjunctivitis there is a papillary reaction of the upper tarsal, with papilla formation, with or without inflammation of the cornea. An important cause of giant papillary conjunctivitis is the chronic use of contact lenses, especially soft lenses, due to the accumulation of protein deposits on their surface. The main symptoms are itching, photophobia, burning, discharge, worsening vision and, in the most severe cases, development of ptosis. Treatment is with topical antihistamines and corticosteroids. Suspending contact lenses for a few days or weeks is also recommended.
