Genital Warts (Condylomata Acuminata) on the Penis
Genital warts, also called condylomata acuminata, are growths caused by human papillomavirus (HPV), most commonly types 6 and 11. Usually acquired through sexual contact, they may be flat or raised, with an irregular or cauliflower-like surface, and can merge into larger plaques. The HPV types that cause genital warts do not cause cancer. Without treatment, the warts may disappear, remain unchanged or increase in size or number. Treatments include topical medicines, freezing, electrosurgery and laser treatment, but recurrence is common. Genital warts are rare in people vaccinated in childhood against the HPV types that cause them. |
