Genital Myiasis: Maggot Infestation Around a Penile Piercing
Genital myiasis is a rare parasitic infection in which fly larvae, or maggots, infest genital tissue. Myiasis can affect healthy tissue or wounds. Some flies lay eggs on or near wounds and sores, and open or untreated wounds increase the risk. It occurs mainly in tropical and subtropical regions and is uncommon in the United States, where most cases occur in travelers. Treatment involves surgical removal of the larvae and cleaning of the wound. A separate case report published in 2017 described genital myiasis associated with an infected genital piercing in a 31-year-old Brazilian man. Treatment included removal of damaged tissue and larvae, ivermectin and antibiotics. |
