The doctors actually leave them on because that's really the only way to tell where the dead tissue ends. It's dry gangrene, there's no infection. That one is probably close to being removed.

Sir Ranulph Fiennes got tired of waiting for the doctors to remove his frostbitten, gangrenous fingers so he did it himself.

Although the term of any area considered as "death zone" can be applied to Mount Everest (altitudes higher than 8,000 m), the situation there is even more difficult for climbers. Temperatures can fall to very low levels which entails freeze anywhere on the body minimally exposed to cold.

With such a low temperature, snow is absolutely freezing and is very slippery increasing the risk of slips and falls. The high wind speed is 135 km/h, also a potential danger for mountaineers.

The atmospheric pressure at the summit of Everest is about a third of sea level pressure and therefore the amount of breathable oxygen is also a third of the usual.
