It's times like this that I don't envy surgeons - imagine cutting opens patient and seeing that. Guess what? You have to fix it. Yay!

Not always....some can't be saved. I have a colorectal surgeon friend who calls cases like this "peek and shriek" - open em up, see the unfixable disaster, and close them up pronto.
Dead bowel is common in severe sepsis...lack of blood flow due to the shock and hypotension. It's fatal 99.9%of the time...there's just nothing you can do.

Having been a scrub nurse when we operated on an Elderly lady with dead gut, I can tell you that the smell can literally clear a room. And when people tell you to breathe through your mouth it's a bad idea cos then you taste it instead of smell it. Yummy!
