Fournier's Gangrene and Other Necrotic Wounds: Fournier Gangrene Pictures
Fournier's gangrene is a rare, rapidly progressing form of necrotizing fasciitis affecting the genital, perianal and perineal regions. It can spread to the abdominal wall. The infection is usually caused by several aerobic and anaerobic bacteria acting together, with sources commonly arising from the anorectal region, genitourinary tract or skin. Diabetes and immunosuppression are important predisposing factors. Treatment involves early resuscitation, broad-spectrum antibiotics and radical surgical removal of dead tissue, which often must be repeated. The condition occurs predominantly in men and peaks in the fifth and sixth decades of life. Reported mortality ranges from 20% to 40%. |
