I’m wondering if this is just a temporary patch job while they prep a skin graft.

It could be the kind where they insert a balloon under the skin and slowly fill it with water. The full ballon creates extra skin(like how excess fat does).

That takes time, so they gotta put the twig and berries somewhere until then.
