A Few Babies Born With Cyclopia

Hopefully this isn't a repost of pics, but here is some more examples of a genetic defect known as cyclopia. I saw one pic of it on a thread, I figured some more wouldn't hurt. If I recall, it is a defect that effects the 13th chromosome. For more details, just search cyclopia.

Re: A Few Babies Born With Cyclopia

Trisomy 13 can be a cause of cyclopia, and there are lots of other causes too. It's actually a defect in brain development that causes the brain not to divide into two hemispheres.

I only really knew about it from what I heard in my bioethics class. I always found it a little interesting for the fact that people with this resemble old drawings of cyclops. I can't help but wonder if some time way long ago someone with this disease functioned like a normal person, creating the myths a bit further along...

Oh, and thanks for the extra info.

From what I've read, it's pretty likely that some of the cyclops myths started out with babies like these... in an age when there were no photographs and most people didn't read, stories passed by word of mouth, and it wouldn't take too many retellings before a deformed baby turned into "My brother's friend knew this guy who was like eight feet tall and only had one eye, and..."
