Yes, girls do get infections from this procedure. They also sometimes die of blood loss, or simple shock. Its purpose is to control women. The specific nature of the mutilation varies from tribe to tribe. Sometimes the clitoris is removed (the purpose of that being to prevent sexual pleasure and thus make it less likely the woman will cheat on her husband). Sometimes the labia are sewn together (to prevent her from being raped or deflowered before marriage). Sometimes everything external is cut off (no idea, but probably just to completely deny everything potentially sexual about a woman; to make her "clean" for adulthood because female sexuality is considered dirty). |

OK this is cultural>>women aren't supposed to like sex and this keeps them from being tainted before marriage. much of the time sewing up the love gash is common and is torn open when the woman is married. The new husband will open it. reminds me of Christmas. YAY PRESENTS!!!!!!!!
