Re: Feel So Sorry for Her

There was a girl from Haiti (I think) and her name was Marley, she had the same deformity and she looks pretty damn good now...a few years after several surgeries. Double fives to both girls.
Name: MARLIE CASSEUS
BORN: 18 yrs
From: Haiti
Diagnosis: Fibrous Dysplasia
Cost of Treatment: $150,000
Status: In Critical Need

Marlie Casseus (born July 7, 1992) is a Haitian teenager who attracted national and international media attention when she received surgery to remove a 7-kg (16-pound) growth from her face that threatened her ability to eat, breathe, and see.
______
Marlie Casseus suffers from polyostotic fibrous dysplasia, a genetic condition in which the bone structure is replaced by connective tissue. This condition affects more than one bone in the body, impairs skeletal growth and development, and can cause deformity. The growth started when she was three years old, and continued to advance until her facial features were completely disfigured. It blocked her nasal passage and most of her mouth so that she could only breathe and eat through a hole placed in the throat. Always a social impediment and a stigma, the growth eventually prompted her to become completely reclusive to avoid public ridicule. Before surgery, the bone growth had become a 7-kg (16-pound) tumor-like mass that covered almost her entire face. It was threatening her breathing and would have eventually caused blindness if doctors hadn't operated.

when you said cartoon character it reminded me of some guy who lived in the midwest who looked like one too. but his whole head was swollen. if i reecall, it was air pockets. i saw him on a tv show back maybe in the '70's? i think it was "Real People" or "riplety's believe it or not". his pic was on a map on the cover of a magazine also, i think it was TIME. he was actually married and had a job and a normal looking kid. he was accepted in the community as just another person. i have always hoped for a pic or a clip of the tv show to show up here but it nevr has. anyone else know what i am talking about?
