From some of her comments on tumblur, she mentions knowing a little about where the arteries are. The picture with the blood shooting out of the wound is one where she accidentally hit an artery. She said she had a panic attack and rushed herself to hospital. She says that for the really bad cuts, she goes to the Dr to get stitched / stapled together, then goes home and does it again.
She doesnt advocate cutting; she speaks like an addict, which I guess she is in every sense of the word.

I dont think any doctor would stitch her up again and again, so I guess there are two possibilities:
a) her doctor is as sick as her
b) she wents from doctor to doctor, which means she got some money for paying the drive and the bill. But from where she gots the money? I don't know if she is an adult, but when she is, I dont think she would get a job witch how she looks. I guess its even hard to get a job with a tattoo or something, but with her badass scars any employer would kick her outta the office.

Because they don't want to die. They are trying to get the bad feelings to go away. The feelings of grief/anger/loss/no hope/wanting to die. They're actually trying to live. Some may do this as a way to punish themselves.
