Exomphalos, is a rare abdominal wall defect in which the intestines, liver and occasionally other organs remain outside of the abdomen in a sac because of failure of the normal return of intestines and other contents back to the abdominal cavity during around the ninth week of intrauterine development. Omphalocele occurs in 1 in 4,000 births and is associated with a high rate of mortality (25%) and severe malformations, such as cardiac anomalies (50%), neural tube defect (40%), exstrophy of the bladder and Beckwith–Wiedemann syndrome. Approximately 15% of live-born infants with omphalocele have chromosomal abnormalities. About 30% of infants with an omphalocele have other congenital abnormalities. |

I breed goldens and one of my mama dogs has had 2 pups like this in 2 different litters. The first time, I thought it was birthing goo on the pups belly and tried to wipe it away tearing at the vital organs. As I was getting a hot water bottle for the trip to the vet, it passed away. The second one was born via c-section. Mama had a small liter causing the pups to get too big and one got stuck in the birthing canal. Of the 3 pups, the one stuck in the birthing canal developed a spinal infection and she lost her tail but survived after a 3k surgery. The second pup, born with insides out, the vet took it upon herself to put it down shortly after delivery bc she "assumed" I didn't want to pay for the costly surgery. I was PISSED. This wasn't my regular vet bc the C-section was an emergency done at an emergency clinic. The third pup was fine and I decided to keep her. If this happens again, I will know what Im looking at and definitely get the surgery. Plz, no grief about being a breeder. All of the rescues in my area are pitbulls or part pit bulls. 4 percent of full breded dogs are no longer available in the US bc of rescue dog efforts with over 50% of the rescues coming from other countries. Golden Retrievers are in the top 2 dogs for family pets. I don't ever want to see this breed decline or suffer due to rescue efforts. Only a small percentage of breeders are mills and are generally amish as they claim and treat them as live stock. All of my dogs are treated like my children. No cages or kennels, they have the run of my house, yard and bed. |
