I wouldn't be surprised if he did survive. I've heard of similar cases where they were able to put the intestines back in. In fact, there are babies born with their intestines on the outside and they are able to put them back inside and most of the them do just fine.

You do not need all of your intestines to survive. My grandmother had Crohn's disease and had the majority of hers removed.She had a colostomy bag that the bowels she DID have emptied into.
She lived that way for around 22 years I think.
