Esthesioneuroblastoma: Chantal Sebire's Euthanasia Request
Chantal Sebire, 52, of Plombieres-les-Dijon in eastern France, sought court permission to receive a doctor-supervised lethal dose after an inoperable esthesioneuroblastoma left her blind, without smell or taste, and with severe eye pain that morphine could not ease. She had been diagnosed about eight years earlier. A Dijon court rejected her request on March 17, 2008, citing French law and medical ethics. She was found dead at home on March 19, 2008. The circumstances of her death were not immediately clear. Esthesioneuroblastoma, also called olfactory neuroblastoma, is a rare cancer that starts in the nasal cavity and affects nerves and tissue used for smell. It affects about 1 in 2.5 million people worldwide each year. Early signs include loss of smell, congestion and repeated nosebleeds. Treatment includes surgery and radiation, with chemotherapy used when the tumor cannot be removed.
