Elephantiasis of the Vulva: Vulval Lymphoedema
Vulval elephantiasis, also called vulval lymphoedema, is enlargement of the vulval tissues caused by lymphatic obstruction. Common causes include filariasis and lymphogranuloma venereum. Less common causes include granuloma inguinale, cancer, lymph-node surgery or radiation, and tuberculosis. Filariasis is the commonest cause of secondary lymphoedema worldwide. Lymphatic filariasis is caused by parasitic worms transmitted by mosquitoes, but not all vulval elephantiasis is filarial. Female genital involvement accounts for no more than 1-2% of filarial elephantiasis cases. Surgical treatment can involve wide excision of the enlarged tissue followed by primary closure of the wound. |
