Ectrodactyly, Polydactyly and Noma: Mixed Medical Conditions
Noma is a rapidly progressing disease that destroys tissue in the mouth and face. It is distinct from congenital conditions such as ectrodactyly and polydactyly. Noma involves multiple types of microorganisms and is linked to malnutrition, weakened immunity, poor oral health and extreme poverty. It is not contagious. The disease mostly affects children aged 2 to 6, with sub-Saharan Africa the most affected region. Early antibiotic treatment reduces mortality. Noma was added to the list of neglected tropical diseases in December 2023. |
