Dry Gangrene of the Hand
Dry gangrene is tissue death caused by a loss of blood supply without infection. It most often begins in the fingers or toes. The affected skin becomes dry, without blisters or pus, and the condition can develop slowly. It is associated with peripheral artery disease and diabetes. Wet gangrene involves both poor blood flow and bacterial infection. It can spread quickly, with blisters that release pus and a foul smell. Treatment depends on the type and extent of gangrene and can include restoring blood flow, removing dead tissue and antibiotics for infection. Amputation is used when other treatments cannot save the tissue or the patient. |
