Dog Gets wooden Splinter in the Eye

Lucky is a 1½ year old female Labrador Retriever who was taken to the vet with an eye injury.

The injury occurred when she was running through a wooded area and suddenly yelped and came back with her right eye closed. Dr. Bruce was able to gently lift the eyelid and see a small piece of wood sitting in the area beside the eye. Lucky was too sore for it to be remove so they sedated her with intravenous butorphanol and dexmedetomidine. They could then see that it was a bigger piece of wood than it appeared, and that it was lodged in the pocket between the eyeball and the socket. Fortunately there was no penetration of the eyeball, but removing a piece of wood from the eye socket required general anesthesia.
With Lucky under isoflurane anesthesia, Dr. Bruce was able to extract the “little” piece of wood. As you can see, the wood splinter was 5cm long.

Lucky had a small corneal erosion from the wood which healed with 2 weeks of topical antibiotics. Today Lucky is her same old self with perfect vision and no long term problems!

Re: Dog Gets wooden Splinter in the Eye

what is it about these dogs named Lucky? (thinking to a previous post about a dog nmed lucky that had a shitload of mango worms removed.) any dog named lucky isn't lucky if it ends up having a medical problem. it may have been lucky to survive but it wasn't lucky to be in the position that it needed any treatment to begin with.

so lucky the dog wasn't lucky to end up with the splinter/stick in his eye but was lucky that it was removed all the eye is ok now. i am happy for lucky the unlucky lucky dog.

i have to agree with prometheus... that is a bit large to be called a splinter.

of course, in a human's eye it would more likely be called a stick. being the drama queen i am at times, if it were in my eye, i would probably call it a limb, branch or half a tree.
