Dog Bite Trauma to Russian Tortoise

Severe dog bite trauma in a Russian tortoise Testudo horsfieldii. Despite the unpleasant presentation, such cases are common, and many make a good recovery. Fluid therapy, analgesia, antibiosis, lavage with debridement and dressing under possible general anaesthetic are all good treatment options.

Recovery is likely to take three months or more in a healthy juvenile like this.

I have a Yellow Bellied Slider Turtle, and my wife dropped him off the table onto the tile floor.

I told her he is quick, so don't leave him out loose when cleaning his tank. But no, she knew best.....

He didn't get hurt, bled a bit from his mouth though. My poor Frankie...

He is next to an Xbox game to show his size. I have no idea how old he is. (she?)

Poor ickle thing, he's adorable - I'm quite relieved to know he'll make a full recovery in time.

Re: Dog Bite Trauma to Russian Tortoise

Mature male red eared sliders have massive long front claws I had one he was larger than a DVD case but smaller than a novel sized / book. They are a bit stupid they will dive into or off anything.

Re: Dog Bite Trauma to Russian Tortoise

I love turtles! I have 2 in my back yard and a red eared slider in a tank inside.

That little turtle is kinda cute. Sure hope it heals up ok :(

Re: Dog Bite Trauma to Russian Tortoise

Females have flat bottom shells, whereas the male has a slightly concave belly for mating purposes. I had two in my pond, but they vanished after a storm.
