Re: Dirty Contact Lenses Nearly Cost Girl Her Sight
I once had hard lenses for astigmatisms back in the old days, but, they were never fitted right and I'd see rings around other vehicle headlights at night so I gave up until years later. I'm scared to death of the Lasik. I'm afraid the doctor would twitch or sneeze and I'd never forgive myself for doing it. I'm happy it worked out well for you |

Re: Dirty Contact Lenses Nearly Cost Girl Her Sight
Hm, interesting. Often times people become hypersensitive to contacts and the body simply doesn't want them in there, because even properly fitting, high dK lenses (ones that let a lot of oxygen through) still cause a large drop in the amount of oxygen reaching the cornea. Mix in an eye that is already irritated and it will not react well to the reduced oxygen. With lots of astigmatism, they have to increase the thickness of the lens, not only to allow for the proper optics, but also because they have to be weighted on the bottom to keep them aligned with the astigmatism in the eye. As your astigamatism worsened, you had to go to thicker and thicker lenses, which meant that less and less oxygen was making it to the cornea. A vicious cycle. Anyway, glad to hear that you found something that works well for your vision! |

Re: Dirty Contact Lenses Nearly Cost Girl Her Sight
Part of being an optometry student is that we have access to all sorts of cool and experimental treatments. Just last month I got a pair of scleral GP lenses, they are rigid and eliminate the astigmatism for most people, but instead of resting and moving on the cornea of the eye, these are bigger than the cornea itself and rest in a 360 ring on the sclera (white part of the eye). Since the lens 1. is not moving (this is what cause the discomfort with rigid lenses) and 2. Not touching the cornea at all they are super comfortable. When I put them in, within 5 minutes I could not tell they were there. No adaptation period. Unfortunately, they are only being used in limited applications for people who have corneal dystrophies or have had trauma to their eye that make it uncorrectable with traditional spectacles and contacts. However, once they get these properly tested and developed, in 5-10 years they might be commonplace. It has the sharper optics of rigid lenses with the comfort of soft, yet one pair will last years if properly cared for. Part of why I enjoy my field. :) |

Re: Dirty Contact Lenses Nearly Cost Girl Her Sight
Cool I don't have discomfort or vision problems with the astigmatic soft lenses, but, I have to avoid the air conditioning and smoke, which I do anyway with the smoke and my asthma. I used to wear them out, then pop them out in my car and where the glasses home. My last pair were from Cooper. I'm good with my glasses |

Re: Dirty Contact Lenses Nearly Cost Girl Her Sight
Article doesn't say what kind she had. Did she have the kind where you can wear them for a week then throw them out? Did she wear the kind that have to be taken out each day? Guess it doesn't really matter in the end. Each kind has their own care instructions... she clearly wasn't following them. I think if someone comes in with infections, ulcers, complications, they should be banned from contacts for a period of time, until they can learn to care for them properly. |

Re: Dirty Contact Lenses Nearly Cost Girl Her Sight
It does not say, but, I think it fits in the catergory of taking responsibility for yourself. I thought a month was the longest for which contacts were approved, but, it's been years since I've worn them. I only slept in mine once just to try it out. It's weird seeing everything when I wake up or in the shower, but, some things are better left unseen |
