Dirty Contact Lenses Nearly Cost Girl Her Sight

It used to make me sick watching people spitting on their lenses, then inserting them into their eyes. People think I'm OCD washing my hands so often, but, things like this remind me, I'm not the one doing this!

Health Student narrowly avoids blindness following gruesome eye infection — parasite grew on dirty contact lens and ATE THROUGH HER EYE.
Ashley Hyde, 18, contracted an acanthamoeba infection in her left eye after failing to change her lenses regularly.

Doctors had to drill into the Florida high school student's eye and take scrapings from the eyeball.

Ashley Hyde, 18, contracted an acanthamoeba infection in her left eye after failing to change her lenses regularly.

Doctors were initially mystified as to the cause of the Pembroke Pines resident's inflammation and blurred vision.

Ashley Hyde's eyes was red and throbbing but doctors couldn't figure out what was wrong. And so they had to drill into her eye and take scrapings from the eyeball.

They soon discovered the microscopic parasite - found in water and soil - had latched onto and spread across the lens.

"They did multiple cultures where they scrape your eye. One time, they had to drill into my eye. It was really nasty," Hyde told Local10.

She's now booked in for months of treatment, which medics hope will clear up the condition once and for all.

Optometric physician Dr Adam Clarin said it was a lesson for people to change their lenses every day.

"Every day, we see people come in with contact lens related to infections, complications, ulcers. These are all things that are potentially blinding," Clarin added.

Nice post and all but GRANDPA DEE!? Tossing on my Twisted Sister record tonight.
I mean it affectionately! Oldest son, Jesse, has two children now.

I call Dee that or Mr. Snider to his face. I can't tell you how many times I've called him Mr. Snider, to which he replies, "Call me Dee! Oh, it's you!"

A.J. also has grandchildren. I don't know about the others.

Dee's a sweetheart Turn it up! If you check my car, they're in there!

Dee and I are only about 2 years apart in age, too.

Re: Dirty Contact Lenses Nearly Cost Girl Her Sight

Reminds me of the time my friend and I were at McD's, she was chewing a bite of her burger and just popped one of her lenses in her mouth, swished it around, and popped it right back in her eye. I nearly puked on the table

Whenever messing with my eyes, I don't get lazy. Make sure everything in your eyes is clean as fuck.

The rare occasions I've worn them, I washed between each step.

Re: Dirty Contact Lenses Nearly Cost Girl Her Sight

Cool, this is right down my alley. I am in my 4th year of optometry school, and my attending says that whenever a contact lens patients lips are moving, they are lying. :) I can't tell you how many people have come in with a nasty red eye related to contact lens wear, and their stories ALWAYS start off the same 'Ive been doing *insert improper use/care of contact lenses here* for years and never had a problem, and then I woke up like this.

Before we dispense any contact lenses to a new patient, we not only read them all of the common causes of problems, but we make them initial and sign it. They still come in claiming they had no idea that wearing monthly contact lenses for 3 months straight and sleeping in them was bad. WTF . . .

Most people don't want to take responsibility for their own stupidity.

Common sense is an oxymoron. I heard stories from a female gynecologist about people not knowing they had to remove diaphragms after each use and inserting vaginal meds with the foil on, (ouch!), and bitching the meds weren't working. And, of course, forgetting a tampon for months!?!?!? EWWWWWW!

How fucking stupid are people? I'm sure I'm not the only one whose doctors explain everything to me. I also read and ask questions.

My optometrist makes us put in the lenses in his office with a sink and running water at our fingertips. We get unlimited visits with new lenses, or if it's been a long time since you have worn contacts.

He and/or the assistants have those plastic tweezer looking things to remove them from anyone who can't grab the lenses to remove them themselves.

Your eyes, as you know, fight them as a foreign object until you get them used to them. Your blinking reflex kicks in. You have to get the feel of them and I know I'm queasy about anything to do with eyes. Weird feel to them :)

People also forget they're in and they go up under their eyelids and people think they can go into their heads. You know, they cannot, but, people get freaked out.

I know a guy who forgot he had his lenses in a popped in another pair. Eventually the first pair worked their way down, but, with enough drops and patience, you can usually work them down to your irides with no scratching or damage WITH CLEAN HANDS!

I don't have issues with fresh lenses, but, was never able to find any solution or the old fashioned heating unit, to be able to wear them more than once. I'm the 0.01% with any issue that may occur :)

I wear glasses and I'm ok with it. With the lightest and non-reflective newer lenses, they don't bother me. I also had sinus issues so I can't have the extra weight on my nose.

Same things with my first ear piercings. I did the cleanings, but, took out those horrid starter earrings and put regular posts in. After having three in each ear, it got easier. I don't wear hanging earrings because I see old ladies, and some not so old, who need a few stitches! Ripped lobes are not pretty.

I believe in prevention, where possible

Best of luck with your career

Re: Dirty Contact Lenses Nearly Cost Girl Her Sight

I had something similar happen when I was younger. It wasn't an issue of the lenses not being clean though. My eyes got so bad (vision wise) that contacts just started rejecting themselves when I'd wear them. I had very bad astigmatism and there was only a few brands I could even wear. I was in and out of the doctor monthly with eye infections. Eventually I had LASIK..best thing ever.
