Most people call it the mumps.
Diptheria and mumps are not even remotely related. Not only are they not the same condition, but diptheria is caused by a bacteria and mumps is caused by a virus. Mumps is caused by a virus infecting the salivary glands and other gland tissue, while diptheria is the result of a toxin released by a bacteria. Vaccination against one will not protect you against the other. Mumps, while painful, is much less dangerous than diptheria.

I think that the confusion arises out of the "bull neck" that some folks get from a severe case of diptheria, and the swelling one gets from mumps.

The first picture is the first pic is the bull neck from Diptheria, the 2nd one is mumps.
