These unfortunate animals were trapped in plastic rings as young and as they grew, the ring restricted growth at site of entrapment and caused the deformity of their shells - and no doubt their internal organs.

That's terrible. Humans rubbish and those poor animals deformed for life.
I'll never forget the day I found a dead mouse inside a plastic bottle in the forest beside our old house. Poor wee mite got in, couldn't get out and starved to death
