Cyclopia in a Newborn Piglet
Cyclopia is a congenital malformation in which a single central eye socket contains one eye or, in a variant called synophthalmia, partly fused or separate eyes. It is the most severe facial expression of holoprosencephaly, a condition in which the embryonic forebrain does not divide completely into two hemispheres. The condition has been reported in piglets and several other animal species, as well as humans. Associated abnormalities include absent nasal bones and upper incisors, sometimes with a nose-like projection. Its causes are multifactorial and can include environmental influences during early embryonic development. It is a developmental malformation, not evidence of a human-animal hybrid. |
