Cyclopia and Neurofibromatosis: Pictures of Facial Deformities
Holoprosencephaly is a condition in which the brain fails to divide into left and right halves. Facial abnormalities occur in several different conditions. The most severe forms of holoprosencephaly can cause cyclopia, a single central eye, with a tube-shaped nose above it. Holoprosencephaly affects about 1 in 10,000 newborns. Most babies with severe forms die before birth or soon afterward. Neurofibromatosis type 1, or NF1, causes changes in skin coloring and tumors that grow along nerves. It results from mutations in the NF1 gene, which makes a protein that limits cell growth. About half of cases are inherited; the others result from new mutations. NF1 affects about 1 in 3,000 to 4,000 people worldwide. Most adults develop benign nerve tumors. |
