Cutaneous Candidiasis: Yeast Infection Rashes
Cutaneous candidiasis is a superficial skin infection caused by Candida yeast. When it affects skin folds, it is called candidal intertrigo. Candida albicans is the main cause, and warm, damp conditions and friction help the infection develop. Common sites include the groin, armpits, areas beneath the breasts or abdomen, and spaces between fingers or toes. The rash typically consists of red, moisture-softened patches with scaling around the edges and small surrounding bumps or pustules. Risk factors include heavy sweating, diabetes, incontinence, obesity and a weakened immune system. Diagnosis is usually based on appearance, with microscopy or culture used when needed. Treatment generally involves addressing contributing factors, keeping affected areas dry and using topical antifungal medicines. Severe or persistent infections may require oral antifungals. |
