A man on a running forum claimed he did this to himself but he's telling porkies! It's part of nail removal surgery - some guy outed him a few posts later.

One time I got frostbite on my big toe.It came off too but it was all brown and gooey, far more disgusting. I was all amazed it didnt hurt at all when I pulled it off, no pain afterwards either or even the stinging you expect in the shower. Nail grew back perfectly.
