I'm actually haunted by 2 cpr procedures i've seen. One lady i was just speaking to when she collapsed. I watched the cpr. Her eyes were open, she looked conscious but she was making the most horrendous choking noises and her eyes showed nothing but pure fear. After a couple of shocks and about 10 rounds of cpr they stopped. That affected me for days. Months even. Another one was a young girl that didn't even look like she was sick. Next minute drops to the floor cardiac arrest. Although i'd never spoke to her i stayed in the background and it made me realise how fragile life really is.

The choking noises were probably agonal respiration, the body's final attempts to obtain, just prior to death. It can sound like choking, gulping or gasping and other times the person might even seem as if they are moaning in pain. It's scary for the person watching and the patient might look afraid, but by the time they are in agonal respiration, the body is already starting to shut down and consciousness/awareness would be minimal at that point, if it all. |

I’ve seen cpr performed once and it still plays in my mind sometimes. It’s a scary thing to see, even if it’s a stranger.
