Congenital Malformations: Deformed Animals With Two Heads or Extra Legs
Kenny, a white tiger with facial malformations, was rescued by Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge in Arkansas in 2000. The refuge attributed his facial abnormalities to inbreeding and rejected the claim that he had Down syndrome. Congenital malformations in animals include duplicated heads or faces and additional limbs. The cause of conjoined twinning has not been clearly explained. Two proposed explanations are that a fertilised egg splits early but the embryos never fully separate, or that two embryos begin separately and later fuse. |
