Congenital Deformities of the Hand
Hi, here is a post about some of the congenital hand deformities. Some of the pictures are large, sorry. They were the best ones I could find. I found a really neat specimen displaying polydactyly (extra fingers). The especially fascinating part is that one of the distal phalanges also branches off.  This one is of the toes, which are also phalanges.   One extra finger, but with no bones or anything. She also included it when she polished her nails! Notice how each side is a reflection of the other.  Clinodactyly is horizontally curved fingers.  Camptodactyly is vertically curved fingers.  Syndactyly is characterized by fused phalanges.  Not all syndactyly is total fusion. A milder form is characterized by webbed fingers and/or toes.  X-ray of syndactyly in a child.  Here is a twisted (as opposed to side-by-side) case.   Syndactyly and polydactyly are not mutually exclusive; they can be comorbid (simultaneous conditions).  I'm not sure what this curvature of the wrist is called. Does anyone else, please?  Hand cleft. Occurs because of a missing finger.  More severe case (more missing fingers).  Volar side hand cleft.  Ectrodactyly X-ray. Colloquially known as lobster-claw syndrome.  Familial ectrodactyly.   X-ray of ectrodactyly.  To finish this series: Syndactyly, polydactyly, ectrodactyly, clinodactyly and hand cleft all in one.  |
