Yaritza Oliva is a 20-year-old Chilean girl who happens to cry tears of blood. What doctors initially thought was an extreme case of pinkeye may turn out to be a rare case of haemolacria, a painful condition that makes tears partially composed of blood and makes us freak out. The cause and cure of the disease are both still unknown, and Oliva's family is asking for financial help to afford treatment. Crazier still, if Oliva does have haemolacria, she'll be one of only three documented cases of the condition. While it can by symptomatic of a more serious illness or even a tumor, it can also be caused by high hormone levels in fertile women.

How does one live 20 years and not know they cry blood? Did they never cry? Or did the family just say "Oh, well those are awfully red tears"? The video did not specify if she had the condition all her life, so I'm wondering when it showed up.

I agree - if this is late onset I'd be scanning the crap out of her for tumors. Then again, if it's something that is hormonal maybe she's just finally of an age or maturity where she's stabilized at a level high enough to cause this condition. Either way great post.
