In Teresina, a baby was hospitalised in a critical but stable condition.

On 14th April 2018, 39 year old Francisco das Chagas Vieira Batista had mutilated his 1 month old son's mouth/chin area. The baby also had facial fractures, bruising + bites to the chest + neck

The baby underwent his first surgical procedure to reconstruct his face + is being tube-fed. The hospital also reported that the baby is being treated with antibiotics + that skin grafting can only happen after recovery.

The reason Francisco gave for the assault was because he doubted that he was the biological father of the baby.

The mother of the baby reported that she had spent the night consuming alcohol with Francisco. She also states that he is a drug user + had consumed crack that night. She says that the assault happened whilst she was asleep + she only woke from hearing the baby's cries after the attack. She took her son to hospital + she's being investigated for neglect.

As well as the baby, the woman has 3 daughters, none of which are Francisco's. The 6 year old was in the house on the day of the assault. The 9 year old lives with her maternal grandmother. It says that the 3rd daughter 'would have been delivered by the mother to a family still unknown' - I don't know if that means that family are looking after her, she was adopted or what.

Apparently the couple have been together for 7 years (interesting, as she has a 6 year old child who isn't his, so maybe his doubts that the baby is his is because she's got pregnant by someone else before in their relationship).

Apparently, Francisco was abusive towards the woman + on the day of the assault on the baby, he had shoved her, injuring her knee.

He doubted he was the father but had no real proof and even if he had proof, when someone does this to a child he needs to be removed from society.
