This is called gastroschisis. I know this because my son was born with the same condition. There is another form of it called exomphalos which is different as there is a sack. Gastro can kill as the major organs can be on the outside BUT most times the kids survive with no issues

My son had all of his large bowel and all of his small intestines on the outside but no organs. He was operated on with in 4 hours of birth and cos he was so big (they missed the gastro on the scan) and he weighed 7.5lb they managed to get all the intestines back in first time. Most gastro babies are delivered early and have a silo and the doctors squeeze the intestines back in over a period of time while the child is unconscious. |

so do babies like that have to use an "out"house? seriously though, i feel for babies who get such a rough start in life. om the other hand, at least now they can be fixed up. before modern medicine, they were probably killed when they were born or died shortly after. i can't imagine they could survive to be an adult or even a toddler. |
