You're supposed to keep the left hand in the mitt 100% of the time the saw is switched on, regardless of whether the motor is running or not, any slips and it activates the chainbrake... There's some cowboy operators out there alright, the chain was probably blunt as fuck too...

Most of the functionality in his left manus will come from his right uninjured thumb
followed by his fifth digit
then his fourth, etc.
At least the poor guy will still be able to
seriously though, he's extra lucky that his palm is just fine.
