I saw this done once when I was going through paramedic school. It was around 1985 at the old LA Co./USC Medical Center's Emergency Room. This guy came in and as I recall went into full arrest and by God, they just cut him open right there in the ER and started massaging his heart...weirdest thing I'd ever seen. Somehow the guy lived to tell the tail. I think it's fairly uncommon though...too many liability and infection risks.
